Week 4- Teacher Interview
I interviewed an elementary school teacher
Ms. Davney who currently teaches in the Bronx. In the socioeconomic
neighborhood she is, she faces many challenges on teaching and working with parents
and students on a daily basis. She expressed that a lesson doesn’t always go as
planned and has to constantly be instructed on a daily basis.
How do you introduce literature and keep
students engaged with informative texts?
“ In my class students and most of the
school students struggle with reading so my constant goal and focus is finding
new ways to introduce literature. I aim to read literature my students can
relate to or literature that they can look forward to in their future. I do a
lot of read a louds, have students read and at times do audio books. I like to
read aloud because I demonstrate with my emotions and actions what is going on
in the book, I find it gives students a better understanding.”
How do you use technology?
“We use technology in many ways, for math,
reading, quizzes, assessments, research, games and making PowerPoint’s and
videos. My classroom also has a smart board where I can model the use of
technology and text in many different ways, and actually give students a chance
to use it.”
How do you get students to focus other
then reading in a large group?
“ I usually set up station based on the
book and chapter we are reading. One group will read with me in a small group,
another will do a writing assignment, some will read with audio book
(headphones) and some students will be on the computer doing another assignment
if they are done. Having an organized class and constructing groups helps my
students focus. “
