Week 3- Assignment 2

•   Which ideas from the video reflect what the ELA teachers you interviewed are currently doing to integrate technology with their literacy instruction? Based on the video the ELA teacher is using a productivity tool in her classroom. She is using the smart bored, ipad, and software apps, to engage her students. •   How can you help change their instructional practices to include the use of technology and the Internet in their literacy and content-area curriculum? I can help by introducing ICT tools ( components of new literacies) and having students use cognitive skills / tools in the classroom. •   What professional development and/or resources will they need in order to make these changes? While using these new components teachers have to use the ICT tools: evaluate, communicate, identify and synthesize the information. By teaching students how to new literacies based on the ICT tools, the use of technology would be more affective. •   What ide...

Week 3 Assignment 1- Theory in Practice.

After reading all three articles, they each discussed the importance of new literacies in today’s era. “New literacies” is known as the new form of literacy used through technology. As a future teacher using new literacy is important to know because this is what out students only know (technology). As well it is important to know how to integrate technology in the classroom efficiently.   In the first article is speaks about technology in the aspect of digital and media. What I like about this article it spoke about how new literacies can be a challenge in the classroom and getting to familiarize your self can take time. There are three important pointers to know before beginning new literacies in classroom that was new to me. This article made me realize a lot and view some expectations differently. The second article speaks about prepping students for the future and teaching them to become proficient in new literacies. The approach of doing this is by adminis...

Week 4- Teacher Interview

I interviewed an elementary school teacher Ms. Davney who currently teaches in the Bronx. In the socioeconomic neighborhood she is, she faces many challenges on teaching and working with parents and students on a daily basis. She expressed that a lesson doesn’t always go as planned and has to constantly be instructed on a daily basis. How do you introduce literature and keep students engaged with informative texts? “ In my class students and most of the school students struggle with reading so my constant goal and focus is finding new ways to introduce literature. I aim to read literature my students can relate to or literature that they can look forward to in their future. I do a lot of read a louds, have students read and at times do audio books. Week 2 Assignment 2- Understanding of Common Core

After watching the video on “Understanding of Common Core’, I had a deeper understanding as to why the common core is effective and why the change was needed.   The video mention that before the common core students were not exposed to speaking, reading, writing and language to the fullest capacity that they can learn from. Students who were in remedial classes continue to be in remedial class in college and had a difficult time looking for jobs because they lacked logical job skills. Overall there was no focus and proper preparation for students to looking forward to and for teachers to set life setting goals. I enjoy the new system because every class preps students for a goal, like college and a job. The focus of reading and understanding what is read is made clear to students, and with good reading comes good writing skills. I personally feel if this was around when I was younger I would be a better writer and reader today.   If my mom didn’t give me t...
