Week 4 Assignment 2

Topic: Stone Fox, Writing a story being in the shoes of Stone Fox.

Grade: 3rd Grade


Standards:
Determine the main idea of a text; recount the key details and explain how they support the main idea.

Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

Central Focus: Students will be able to write a descriptive story based on the book they read in class Stone Fox. By the end of the lesson they will be able to use descriptive language, proper grammar, being able to relate to the author and character.  Most importantly are students able to spell these words correctly. They will apply knowledge from the book they have read and different learning techniques on how to write and focus on the important part of a descriptive story.

Learning Objectives:

·      Students will be able to write a descriptive narrative.
·      Students will know how to write a story “putting themselves in the author character shoes”.
·      Students will be able to use descriptive language and key terms when writing.
·      Students will be able to not get the most common misspelled words correctly.

Essential Questions:
·      How can we use descriptive language when writing?
·      How can we check and correct our grammar when editing our work?
·      How can we write relating to the author or character?
·      Are students able to spell the most misspell words correctly?

Assessment:

·      How students edit their work based on the rubric and guidelines they are given.
·      Are students able to write a story relating to the author or character?
·      Did students spell all the words correctly in their writing
·      Completing the watermelon worksheet
·      Teacher will come around to monitor student’s work and ask questions.

Instructional Procedure:

·      Students and teachers as a class will recap Stone Fox and retell the ending. Teacher will write key facts on the smart board for students to refer to.
·      Students will then play the game Spellerz! For word practice. By this time students should be familiar with the game. Teacher will then review these words as a class and add on any other words they have found.
·      Teacher will then go over the “watermelon” method with the class using an example. The watermelon method is when students have a big thought with a lot of “seed” pieces and do not know how to shrink it down to one part or how to organize there thoughts. The watermelon sheets helps them do this and keeps them organize.
·      Students will go back to their seats and start to write down ideas so they can write their story. “ What would you do if you were Stone Fox?”
·      Before students begin writing they are given a rubric and guideline sheet of what to include and what should be done for this writing assignment.
·      Students will work on this for 3 days and have 2 days to edit, In total a week to complete the writing assignment. After it has been reviewed and edited by their writing partner and teacher, student will be able to type it and draw a picture with a new cover page.

·      Rubric and guidelines of directions and outcome
·      Laptop/Computer
·      Smart Board

Reflection:
·      Was the lesson effective and engaging?
·      Did students get distracted easily?

·      Did students have a clear understanding of completing the writing assignment?
