According to the article, students who are currently in college have not been prepared in reading and comprehension when reading and learning because of the on demand use of technology. As I see on a daily basis with my students, they lack focus and engagement if it doesn’t involve technology or a on demand topic.   Being that this is the era of technology the article suggest that schools should use new literacies to connect with students.   Using new literacies is digital and help students focus and engage more with reading and comprehension in a topic. Second Life is a great game that kept me engaged for way too long, it can definitely be used in your classroom with the multimodality that can be applied.   It provided a lot of visual tools that can be described. If it were my ELA class I will have students create a story of at least two different islands. They have to create a detailed story, background information of the character and a story line to make the readers want more. Students can do so much with SL that it can be an continues assignment of different types of writings. Having teachers give these assignments can expand their creativity and writing skills.

After reading both articles, they both come to the same important point of technology in the classroom. One article focused on understanding of ICT’s by teachers and the other was social media in the classroom. In order for both to occur in the classroom we have to make the students feel comfortable when using technology so that way the transition is smooth and students can adapt to become familiar. In most cases if teachers are not familiar with technology they tend to shy away from it and teach using textbooks or lecture. In the country we live in this isn’t fair or possible anymore because we are in an advance world of technology. In addition it can be used in the classroom for quizzes, assignments, planning and notes.   Teachers can able to give homework and assignments, set a due date, write notes and reminder and grade with instant feedback.   When quizzes are given on Edmodo they are able to be multiple choice, true or false, fill in , matching. Giving these quizzes helps students who need extra time, they are able to see the time limit and provides different options for every different learning need.
